Celia Cruz, Cuban Salsa Queen, Dead at 77


"The Queen of Salsa", Celia Cruz, who went from performing in her native Havana, Cuba, to become a renown international star, died at her Fort Lee, NJ home.

Cruz, who is credited with bringing salsa to a worldwide audience, became famous with the legendary Afro-Cuban group La Sanora Matancera. She fled Cuba for the United States in 1960.

In 1994, Cruz was honored with an award from the National Endowment of the Awards by then President Bill Clinton.
